Virginia (Lewis) Scanlon, 74, passed away at home on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 after a remarkable life full of family and love. Jo was born in Covington, VA on April 29, 1936. She spent her childhood in West Virginia and joined the U.S. Air Force upon graduating from high school. Shortly after being stationed at Scott Field, IL, she met and married Don Scanlon. Their six-week courtship became a marriage of 55 wonderful years. Jo spent much time volunteering for the North Kansas City School District, indulging her long-held desire to teach young people. She also served as a volunteer usher for the Theater League and Folly Theatre. She is survived by her devoted husband Don; daughters Debra Hurst and Sandy Rogers; a sister Betty Dahlquist of Georgia, sons-in-law Wayne Hurst and Phil Rogers, sister and brother-in-law Linda and Fred Whisman, grandchildren Jack Hurst, Julia Higgerson, Alec Rogers and Peter Rogers, and dozens of loving extended family members. To know Jo was to become a better person, as her countless friends and loving family can attest. Services will be at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park in Kansas City, with visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. and funeral service 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19.
