Virginia Jamison

Virginia Ann (Ginny) Jamison died September 14, 2016 after a long illness. She lived in the Kansas City North area for over fifty years. Ginny and her husband Gene owned and operated Ginny’s Liberty Liquors in Liberty and Gene’s Party Shop in Gladstone for over 25 years. They also owned The Liquor Hut and Spirit World in Independence for a number of years. Ginny enjoyed working in the stores and interacting with customers. After her husband’s death, she reluctantly sold the stores and retired at the age of 79.
Ginny was born May 12, 1922 to Winnie P. and Harley P. Mathewson on the family walnut ranch in Tulare County, California. She was the oldest of five sisters, and a child of the Depression. The family, which included her paternal grandparents, grew most of their food, raised chickens, and had a milk cow. She often spoke of the wood burning stove where her mother prepared meals, the many quarts of fruits and vegetables they canned, and her father’s skill as a mechanic. She fondly remembered the two room school she attended in fifth through eighth grade, and her teacher Mrs. Bower.
Ginny attended high school and junior college in Visalia, California. She was introduced to Eugene O. (Gene) Jamison in junior college, and they dated as he continued his education at the University of California-Davis. Gene joined the Army Air Corps during World War II. Ginny flew to the East Coast where he was training, and they married June 10, 1944. While Gene served in the South Pacific, Ginny worked as a secretary in Visalia. She continued her secretarial work as Gene returned home, and his work for a national ice cream company moved them around the country. She was a homemaker for almost twenty years while raising four children. During those years she was active in her children’s school, church, and scouting activities.
Ginny was predeceased by her husband Eugene O. Jamison, son Keith B. Jamison, and sisters Marilyn Arnett, Vivian Nenninger, and Harlean Parshall. She is survived by daughters Kathleen Jamison of San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Kimberly Jamison of Columbia, Missouri, son Kevin L. Jamison of Gladstone, daughter-in-law Eleanor Jamison of Gladstone; grandchildren Kelly Jamison, Kenneth Jamison, and Holly Haas (Rob); brother-in-law Joseph E. Parshall and sister Carole Mathewson. Extended family includes Julie Miske, Debbie Reed; two nieces, Diana Camba and Janie Moore; a nephew, Harley Arnett, and numerous cousins.
A memorial service celebrating Ginny’s life will be held at 1:30 PM on October 8, 2016 at Terrace Park Funeral Home 801 NW 108th street, KCMO.
