Virgel E. Adams, A beloved member of the Kansas City community, passed away on December 2, 2023.
Born October 10, 1927, Virgel led an extraordinary life filled with dedication, compassion, and a remarkable work ethic.
After completing his military service as a Rifleman and Paratrooper in the Army from 1946-1948, Virgel pursued his education at Iowa State University. He attended from 1948 to 1952 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. It was during these formative years that he developed the skills and values that would shape his future endeavors.
In 1952, Virgel arrived in Kansas City and began working for Howard Needles Tammen & Bergendoff (HNTB) for an impressive stretch of 18 years. Virgel later embarked on a new chapter in his career when he joined Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers until retirement.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Virgel cherished spending time with family and engaging in activities that brought him joy. A passionate supporter of his children's and grandchildren's teams, he often attended sporting events alongside loved ones. He took immense pride in watching his grandchildren perform and was always present to cheer them on.
Virgel had a heart full of love for his family who meant everything to him. Their happiness was paramount in his life, and he reveled in every opportunity to create lasting memories together. Whether it was family gatherings or vacations, he relished every moment spent with those closest to him.
Participating with his children, he generously gave his time and became a troop leader for both Cubs and Boy Scouts, instilling invaluable life skills and guiding countless young individuals toward becoming responsible citizens.
In his leisure time, Virgel found solace in pursuing various hobbies and interests. Woodworking was more than just a hobby; it was a passion that allowed him to create beautiful pieces of craftmanship. The hours he spent tinkering in his shop, creating something from scratch, brought him immense joy. Additionally, he had a green thumb and spent countless hours perfecting his garden. Bird watching also captivated him, providing moments of tranquility as he observed nature's beauty.
Virgel E. Adams will forever be remembered as a dedicated family man, a committed professional, and a pillar of strength within the community. Virgel spent more than 25 years delivering Meals on Wheels through North Kansas City Hospital. He surrendered his route once he turned 95! His warm smile and kind-hearted nature touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him.
Although we mourn the loss of Virgel E. Adams, let us also celebrate the profound impact he had on our lives. May his memory serve as an inspiration to live each day with unwavering dedication, kindness towards others, and a commitment to family. Virgel was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lela Adams; his loving wife, Norma Adams; 10 brothers and sisters; as well as his daughter-in-law, Denise Adams.
Surviving Virgel are his four children; Mike (Jay) Smith, Marty Adams, Matt (Kathy) Adams, Mitch (Susan) Adams; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
