Sonjya Ownbey

Sonjya Ann Ownbey, 58, of Gladstone, MO died at NorthCare Hospice House on Friday, May 13, 2016.  She was born a Christmas baby on December 25, 1957 in Harrison, AR.

Sonjya attended Keytesville, MO High School and in 1980, she graduated from Central Methodist University, Fayette, MO  with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She went on to attend Westminster College of Rider University in Princeton, NJ, receiving a Master of Arts degree in 1985.

Sonjya became a financial analyst at the Henly Group in Morristown, NJ.  Then in a completely new direction, became the Development Director at the Good News Home for Women, a Christian-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, in Flemington, NJ. In 1999, she returned to Missouri to be closer to family and began working at Research Medical Center.  Her career at Research spanned 16 years.    Sonjya loved the work and the people. Sonjya’s natural talent was art and music.    She had many church organist positions over the years, finally coming to Faubion Methodist Church where she played 10 years until she was diagnosed with brain cancer in the fall of 2015.

Sonjya is survived by her mother, Evelyn (Sims) Ownbey of Gladstone MO and sister, Arletta Ownbey of Gladstone, MO.  She was preceded in death by her father, John Ownbey.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 21, 2016 10am.  Funeral Service at 1130am at Faubion Methodist Church, 7113 N Troost, Gladstone, MO.
