Russel Coleman Stephens Jr., 86, of Kansas City, MO passed away on November 16, 2019.
Russel “Jr”, was born on March 1, 1933 in Sampsel, MO to Russel Sr. and Venice (Ott) Stephens. After graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a radarman during the Korean War. In 1956, he moved to Kansas City and a year later married the love of his life, Millie Walton, on May 26, 1957. For a short time he worked for Dictaphone Company, and even serviced Harry Truman’s phone after his presidency. He began his career with TWA in 1966, working as an instrument mechanic until retiring in 1995. One of his cherished memories was when he became a born again Christian in the early 1970’s. He was a longtime member and deacon at Lifebridge Baptist Church, formally known as Glenwood Baptist Temple. Russ enjoyed collecting model cars, and taking long walks, but spending time with his family was always most important to him, especially watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.
Russ is preceded in death by his parents and son, Craig Stephens.He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Millie; children, Kevin (LaDonna), Doug (Karen), and Debbie (Jeff) Herbert; grandchildren, Austin, Jillian, Rhiannon, Jonathan and Aaron; brother, Frank Stephens; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home and Cemetery on Saturday, November 23rd at 11:00am, with visitation one hour prior and burial following. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contribution be made to the Billy Graham Association (1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201).
