Roscoe Reed

May 24, 1930 — December 3, 2013

Roscoe Reed, 83, passed away on December 3rd, 2013, in Kansas City, following an extended illness.  Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday December 6, 2013 at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home 801 NW 108th St. Kansas City, Missouri 64155.  Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.  Private Burial to follow.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis; his mother, Mary Ann Reed; sisters: Leona Truelove, Nadine McPherson, Virginia Reed, Cecile Ballou, and Juanita Collins; brothers: Richard, Ray, Bus, and Bill.  He was quite the gymnast/athlete at Westport High School in the late 40's and spent his entire career on the KCMO Police Department, retiring in the early 80's.  Although he was raised by his loving mother and many siblings, he was self-taught in just about every aspect of his life.  His gentle, quiet presence and unlimited patience was evident as was his love for children.  He was referred to by his family as "the baby hog" because all babies would relax in his arms.  He loved spending crappie-fishing time at the Lake of the Ozarks and Smithville Lake, was a comedic storyteller, loved to play pinochle and dominos, worked multiple crosswords and cryptoquips daily, was truly entertained by Victor Borge's "phonetic punctuation/inflationary language" and Ed Zern's Hunting and Fishing from A to Zern, and took great pride in a well-manicured lawn.  Survivors include his two daughters: Julie (Matthew) Calvert, of Kansas City, and Cindy (Greg) Watkins, of Springfield; grandchildren; Adam (Kate) Calvert, Nick Calvert, Ethan Calvert (Kati Snodgrass), Kansas City and Kelsey Watkins, Springfield; brother, James A. Reed (PatsyAnn) and sister, Charlene (Paul) Niewald; and many nieces, nephews, neighbors, and a whole host of friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to NorthCare Hospice, 2900 Clay Edwards Drive, North Kansas City, Missouri 64116.  The family would also like to extend deepest thanks to his nurse, Trish, and the wonderful staff of NorthCare Hospice.
