Robert "Bob" Arndt Schowengerdt, age 92, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024. Born on May 18, 1932, in Mayview, Missouri, to Robert and Olga Schowengerdt, Bob grew up on the family farm, cultivating a deep appreciation for nature and the simple joys of life. He graduated from high school in Higginsville and soon after enlisted in the United States Air Force.
After his service, Bob worked as a telephone lineman for Southwestern Bell, dedicating 33 years to the company. His journey with Southwestern Bell would lead to many lifelong friendships. On April Fool's Day in 1979, he married Jennifer Smith The two met through a bowling alley league and never stopped enjoying each others company. They spent countless cherished hours together, traveling the country in their motorhome, visiting campgrounds, square dancing, and they were such regulars at the local Waffle House that the staff would start making their signature orders as soon as they pulled in the parking lot. Bob was also a proud member of the Pioneers Volunteer Network, where he and Jennifer joined fellow members on many camping trips. His love for the outdoors extended to his own backyard, where he found peace watching the birds and squirrels, ensuring they were always well-fed, and enjoying the company of his beloved dogs.
Bob gave back to his community through numerous volunteer activities. He shared his famous chili at company cookouts, served at the book bank, helped with the Easter egg hunt for visually impaired children, dressed as Santa Claus for the Communication Workers of America Christmas events, and joyfully participated in the annual Snake Saturday Parade. His hobbies reflected his unique character; he was an avid collector of model train sets and vintage telephones.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Jennifer; sisters, Dorothy Begemann and Jean Lear; and grandson, Jason Schowengerdt.
He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Rob (Brenda) Schowengerdt, Kelly (Ace) Chambers, Amy Shukert, and Doug Shukert; grandchildren, Jessica Schowengerdt, Caleb (Elouise) Chambers, and Alisha Shukert; great-grandchildren, Charlotte Chambers and Elizabeth, Piper, and Ethan Coggins; brother-in-law, Donn (Vicki) Smith; and many extended family and friends.
