Richard Gardner

October 27, 1936 — April 29, 2017

Richard “Dick” Gardner died at home April 30, 2017.  A Memorial Celebration will be held Friday, May 5, at 11:00 a.m. at Hillside Christian Church, 900 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City, MO, with visitation prior to the service at 10:00 a.m.

Dick was a police officer with the Kansas City Police Dept for 26 years.  As a very community minded person, he worked with “Send a Child to Camp,” Office Friendly, and as Community Resource Officer.  After retiring, he was employed by Jules Borel as a purchasing agent for jewelry and watch parts.  He worked diligently with the Boy Scouts in Troop 8 and Tribe of Mic O Say.  He was well known at the schools of his children for supporting all school programs and going on field trips.  Dick was active in College Heights United Methodist Church and in later years, at Hillside Christian Church where he served as elder, chairperson of the elders, Men’s group Leader, and the Regional Christian Church as parliamentarian, Men’s Leader and with New Church Development.

Dick was born on Oct. 27, 1936, in Otisco, NY, to Doris Gardner.  He grew up in Apulia Station, NY and graduated from Tully High School before coming to Kansas City to National College, later known as St. Paul’s School of Theology.  He married Wilma Greer in 1959. After Wilma’s death, he married Marilyn Lile Kovach.  Children of the family include Patricia Brightwell (Barry), Linda Joyce (Tom), Richard E. Gardner, Russell Gardner (Nancy), Brandon Kovach (Laura), and Krista Kovach-Hindsley (Tom).  Dick is the loved “Grandpa” to 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Memorial Gifts may be made to Hillside Christian Church or the New Church Division of the Regional Christian Church.
