Peter F. Winkler, 70, of Kansas City, MO died at home on Monday, June 18, 2018. He was born September 3, 1947, in Hachmuehlen, Germany.
Peter came to the United States as a child. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18, and survived the fire aboard the USS Forrestal in July of 1967. He enjoyed exercising, telling tall tales, and playing the German card game Skat with his sons and brother. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to Moab, UT, Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo., and Arkansas. He had a passion for photography, as well as writing. He wrote and published a novel, “Armageddon Paradox,” in 2016. He spent 30 years working at the Kansas City Fire Department, retiring as a captain. His greatest joy was playing with and spending time with his grandsons.
He is survived by his sons Eric (Sara) Winkler and Michael Winkler, grandsons Owen, Chase and Korben Winkler, brother Horst (Sallie) Winkler, sisters Karen (Bill) Schleper and Linda (Mike) Moore. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends both in the U.S. and Germany.
Peter is preceded in death by his parents Hermann Winkler and Carol “Omi” Albertsen and infant daughter Alison Winkler.
Visitation will be Monday, June 25, 2018, from 10 AM to 12 PM at Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108th St. (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek) Kansas City, MO. Funeral service will be Monday at 12 PM at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at Terrace Park Cemetery.
