COMPTON, Orveta Ruby RowlandOrveta passed from this life on November 22, 2013 at her home in Kansas City, MO. She achieved the age of 91 years and 5 months. She was the wife of Eugene Doyle COMPTON and the mother of 2 children, Edra Ruth COMPTON Green and Ronald Eugene COMPTON.She was born in Thorp Spring, TX on June 23, 1922. During her growing up years, Orveta was an only child. She treasured the memories of playing with her cousin Harris Nichols, friend Missie Miles, and cousin Louise Giles. She was especially close to Louise and loved her "as a sister".Orveta was baptized into The Lord at the young age of 10 and has been a faithful and beautiful Christian through her long life. She said she was especially influenced by her father to study the Bible, worship God, and be faithful. Her mother taught her to cook and sew and how to be kind and respectful to everyone.Orveta asked Eugene for their "1st date". She was elected Queen of Breckenridge High School and her coronation took place Valentine night 1939. In her words, "I was given the opportunity to select my Lord Chamberlain for the event. Eugene was new in our school and he was 'so cute', so I asked him to be my escort. He placed the crown on my head during this Valentine Queen's Court celebration. This was our "1st date" and began the story of our romance and long life together!" They married August 18th, 1941 and they were blessed to celebrate 72 years of marriage. She graduated from Breckenridge High School with Eugene in 1939 and then attended Abilene Christian College with her cousin Louise for one year. Orveta's family moved to south TX in 1940 when her father accepted employment with the Baytown, TX school system. The new employment and tales of this "prosperous area" drew her family to the Goose Creek School System and Baytown became their home for over 55 years. While in school, Orveta enjoyed several elected honors:- "High School Buckaroo Queen" and National Honor Society, Breckenridge, TX- Ko Jo Kai Social Club and National Honor Society, Abilene Christian College, Abilene, TX- Lee "Belle" and Sigma Alpha Chi, Lee College, Baytown, TXThe school system was to play a large role in her life, as she worked many summers with her father to order, record, and distribute textbooks for the entire school system. She became the "textbook secretary", working full time for the schools. Orveta retired after 29 years as Administration School Secretary in Baytown, TX in 1986.Eugene and Orveta both worked at Consolidated Aircraft before he went into the Navy, during World War II defense work in San Diego, CA. After Eugene entered the Navy, they lived in Norfolk, VA until the war ended. With the exception of one year (1943) in San Diego, CA and one year (1945) in Norfolk, VA, Eugene and Orveta lived in Baytown, TX their entire married life until moving to Kansas City, MO to be near children, grands, and greats in 1995. Their saying was "We've got it great in Baytown, Texas!" This was a difficult move for them, but being near their family was that important to them.During their marriage they enjoyed extensive travel within the USA and in other countries. An especially enjoyable goal they reached was their trip to England, seeing the homeland of Compton ancestors. Another travel highlight was a trip to "the holy lands" to see in person the places they had read about for so long in Bible study. They researched family genealogy whenever possible during travels together and enjoyed sharing their treasure of information with descendants.Orveta was active in the Baytown Friends of Florida College Booster Club, raising many thousands of dollars towards scholarships for local students, as well as their own grandchildren. Their specialties were Texas pecan sales and the hugely successful annual "garage sale". Orveta enjoyed the fellowship of Christians in their Baytown church of Christ congregation for 55 years and continued to be in contact with many of those old friends. She then enjoyed new fellowship while worshiping with the Nashua church of Christ once they moved to KC. Just as her mother, she enjoyed cooking and prepared many special dishes, such as "Pickled Shrimp" and Fried Shrimp caught by Eugene in the near by bay. Through the years, she and Eugene enjoyed attending Florida College Lectureships. She taught children's Bible classes for many years, fixed many dinners for family and friends in their home, and enjoyed playing favorite games like Chinese Checkers, and "42" dominos. Through her long illness and disability, Orveta's family was greatly assisted by several skilled and loving caretakers. We are especially indebted to Anya Eremenko and Shannon Goncalves for their devotion to Orveta and Eugene. Orveta's family is so grateful for the love and care shown from many of their church family, friends and volunteers. Love took form in the way of yard work, delicious meals, cards, visits and prayers. Other friends who played a special role in caring for Orveta are Rachel Mattli, Avilda Miller, Debra Sapp-Yarwood and the staff at North Kansas City Hospice House.
