Norman Paul Sandhorst, 75, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on February 8, 2022.
Norman, or Stormin’ Norman, as he was affectionately known by, was born on July 9, 1946 to Paul and Esther (Wesack) Sandhorst. Norman spent his early childhood in Atlantic, Iowa. His family later moved to the Bouton/Woodward, Iowa area where he was fortunate to have his mother teach his 3rd grade class. In 1964, he graduated from Urbandale High School. He continued his education at Grandview College and began his long career working for Hy-Vee Grocery Store in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1965, Norman married Donna Allen, and from this marriage, was blessed with two children, Allen and Leslie. Through his hard work and dedication, Norman became manager of the bakery department when he was only 20 years old. He met Patricia Schultz and they married in 1980. Norman’s career with Hy-vee provided him the opportunity to relocate and assist with opening new store locations in the Kansas City area until he retired (for the second time) after 50 years of service as Bakery Manager. Norman and Pat spent time traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He also enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, and playing cards and cribbage with his buddies.
Norman is preceded in death by his parents. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Pat Sandhorst; son, Allen B. Smitley; daughter, Leslie Allen; sister, Marcene (Richard) Steinick; stepchildren, Mark (Marie) Schultz and Shelly (Gary) Blair; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery at the Lakeside Chapel on Saturday, March 19th, with visitation at 1:00pm, followed by the memorial service at 2:00pm.
