Mary A. Swan, 87, born Mary Agnes Pace on 16 November 1936 in Port Gibson, Mississippi, peacefully passed away on 25 June 2024 in Gower, Missouri. She was the beloved daughter of James II and Lillian (Twomey) Pace. Following Lillian's marriage to Richard Sanders, he adopted Mary and her younger brother Jim.
Mary was united in marriage to James E. Swan on 25 May 1956 in Hannibal, Missouri where they met at Hannibal-LaGrange Junior College. After James served in the US Marine Corps, they established their home in Kansas City, Missouri, where they raised three children. Mary was deeply involved in her community and dedicated herself to various roles, including Girl Scout Leader, active member of the PTA, and a cherished member of the church choir at Northgate Baptist Church. Her passion for helping others extended to her involvement in the deaf ministry team and supporting numerous charitable organizations. Mary's love for literature was evident as an avid reader throughout her life.
Professionally, Mary contributed her talents as a secretary at Commerce Bank, worked in the box office of The American Heartland Theatre, and retired from the finance department of the Kansas City Star newspaper.
Mary Swan is survived by her loving family: two daughters, Terry (Connor) of Grant’s Pass, Oregon, and Barb of Gladstone, Missouri; one son, Robert (Kristin) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; cherished grandchildren, Matt Swan and Mallory Swan of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; brothers Richard Sanders of Caruthersville, Missouri, and Marc (Cathy) Sanders of Austin, Arkansas; sister Charlotte Fowler of Cabot, Arkansas; many beloved nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Donna Cardwell of Gladstone, Missouri.
Mary will be remembered for her kindness, dedication to her family and community, and her unwavering faith. Her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be held Saturday, July 6th, 2024 at 2:00pm, visitation at 1:00pm at Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, 801 NW 108th St, Kansas City, MO 64155. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s honor to Gower Convalescent Center, 323 US-169, Gower, MO 64454 or Freudenthal Hospice 2425 N Woodbine Rd Ste. A, St Joseph, MO 64506.
