MARY KAY JOHNSON
Mary Kathryn Johnson passed away in Wichita, Kansas on July 21, 2015. Born near Winston, Missouri, Mary Kay graduated from Winston High School in 1947, attended Northwest Missouri State University for the summer, and then starting teaching grades 1-8 in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1952 she married Charles Thomas Johnson from Maysville, Missouri, and they moved to Spokane, Washington, where Charles was in the US Air Force and Mary Kay worked for the Air Force. After the Air Force, Charles started building houses in Spokane and Mary Kay was his bookkeeper and gopher. Daughters Vicki and Valerie were born in Spokane. In 1964 the Johnsons moved back to Kansas City, Missouri, to be near family. Mary Kay went to work as a Benefits Authorizer for the Social Security Administration. She was active in the Liberty Belle Chapter of the ABWA, being named Woman of the Year in 1987-88. Mary Kay and Charles were avid square dancers in the Pistols & Petticoats club. True to her name, Mary Kay was a Mary Kay Cosmetics sales person for many years. In 1990 she retired, and Mary Kay and Charles became snowbirds in the Sun Cities, Arizona. In 1999 they moved to Arizona full time, attended real estate school, and enjoyed a successful ten-year run as realtors in the Sun Cities. Throughout her life, Mary Kay was an internally tough and externally genuinely nice person loved by all. Mary Kay was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her parents Dewey and Mable Bowman, sisters Dollie Jones and Wilma Bowman, and brothers Donald, Lloyd, and Junior Bowman. Mary Kay is survived by daughters Vicki Johnson of Bel Aire, Kansas and Val and Mike O’Keefe of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and brothers James (Mary) Bowman of St. Joseph, MO and Merlin (Mary) Bowman of Liberty Missouri. Visitation will be Saturday, July 25, 2015 from 12-1:30 PM at Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108thSt. (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek) Kansas City, MO. Funeral service will follow at 1:30 PM at the funeral home. Interment in Terrace Park Cemetery. Family and friends will gather for a lunch at 11 AM at the Lakeside Chapel.
