Marjorie Jane “Marge” Houcek, 92, was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and resident of Blue Springs.
Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Marge was graduated from Lakeview High School, a member of the National Honor Society, and played clarinet in the concert band. She loved many sports, played volleyball all through school, and played sandlot baseball with friends – many times the only girl. Other summer days were spent swimming in Lake Michigan or trying to sneak into Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs, where sometimes the guards, late in the game, would turn their backs and let her and friends in.
Growing up, her mother was her hero, who somehow held it together during the great depression years, often working more than one job.
She married her darling husband, Frank, also from Chicago, on Apr. 8, 1947. Frank was a captain in the U.S. Army, fought in World War II, and received numerous awards for valor in the European theater.
The couple and their two sons moved to the Kansas City area in 1961. Marge and Frank lived in Blue Springs, MO for 15 years.
Marge worked at Farmland Industries as an executive secretary for 18 years. She was a long-time Royals and Chiefs fan, and said the highlight of her sports life was attending game 7 of the 1985 World Series and watching the Royals win.
She is preceded in death by her dear husband, Frank, with whom she enjoyed 66 years of marriage and who died 2 years ago at 91, and her sister Florence Taylor and brother Bill Tallman, both of Chicago.
Marge leaves two sons, Frank Jr. of Blue Springs, and Rick of Atlanta, plus three grandsons, two granddaughters, and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Marge will be held at 2 p.m., with visitation preceding services 1-2 p.m. Fri., Jan. 22 at Terrace Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 801 NW 108th St. (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek Parkway), Kansas City, MO 64155.
