M. Pherigo

October 4, 1922 — December 17, 2015

Mildred Louise Pherigo nee Devers, 93, died peacefully December 17, 2015 at her home in Smithville, MO. She was born October, 4, 1922 in Walnut, KS, the daughter of the late William O. and Margaret Cox Devers.

She was preceded in death by her husband James R. Pherigo in 1991, an infant daughter in 1943, and her five siblings. She is survived by her children, Royan and David Pherigo, of the home, and Jamie Close of Raytown, Mo. And by her granddaughter Staley Holtzclaw Wessel, her husband Rick Wessel and Louise's great-grandchildren Christian Jones and Reagan, Tallon and John Wessel.

Louise spent most of her childhood in Smithville, Missouri. She was a member at the Smithville Christian Church where she was baptized at age 13. She married James “Jim” Pherigo May 27, 1941. Their first child, Constance, born in 1943, died less than a month after birth from pneumonia. Jim was in the Marine Corps during WWII fighting in the Pacific. After he came home they began their family again. In 1947 their daughter Royan was born. Then their only son David, in 1949, and lastly their daughter Jamie in 1952. Jim’s work took them to several different states but they returned always to Smithville and bought their first house there.  Louise had always been a homemaker until Jim, due to health reasons, could not work. She took a night job as Nurse’s Aide at Spelman Memorial Hospital and found she liked the camaraderie of working with other women. After retirement they bought an RV and began to see the country together. This was one of the best periods of their lives. They became snowbirds, traveling to Brownsville, TX, each winter and going to various northern states in summer. After Jim’s death, Louise took up ball room dancing for a while.
