Lyle D. Mitchell, 75, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, March 30, 2012 with his family by his side. He was born in Friend, Nebraska on February 21, 1937 to Maurice and Irene Mitchell. He graduated from The University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1961, and was a lifelong Cornhusker fan. Lyle was a captain and instructor pilot at Craig AFB, Alabama for the United States Air Force, and was a commercial pilot for TWA for over 25 years. After his retirement, Lyle was a member of ROMEOs, a group of retired TWA pilots who meet for breakfast every Tuesday at Corner Café in Riverside, MO. He was a member, deacon, elder and was Church Manager at Northland Cathedral, Kansas City, MO. Lyle suffered a severe spinal cord injury on July 1, 2005. We want to thank Lyle's professional agency, Barr Private Care Services and Eileen VanTasel, owner, for their several years of providing exceptional personal care for Lyle. A special thanks to Deborah Nunn who was his compassionate caregiver for almost 7 years. We are also grateful for the many other wonderful caregivers who were involved in his daily care. Pat Sharp is a special family friend who also provided caring support on a regular basis. We are grateful to Ben Crain and Richard "Bubba" Heinisch, longtime friends and fellow pilots for their faithful weekly visits over the many years. Lyle is survived by Marnie, his wife of 56 years; his sons Brad (Janice) of Kansas City and Byron (Rebekah) of Irving, TX; granddaughters Christina (Scott) Ferguson and Amanda Mitchell; grandsons Byron Jr. and Matt; infant great-granddaughter Emma Ferguson. Several close brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Irene Mitchell and grandson Jonathan Daniel Mitchell. Lyle was a very special man who consistently demonstrated his faith and devotion to God, his family, friends, church and community. His warmth, wisdom, gentle spirit and humor earned him the respect of all who knew him. He made this world a better place in which to live. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 11:00am at Northland Cathedral, 101 NW 99th St., Kansas City, MO 64155 with Pastor J. Lowell Harrup officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 3rd from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the church. Interment at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery will follow the funeral service.
