The family moved to southeastern Iowa and later to Chicago, Illinois, where Jeanne graduated from Farragut High School in 1945. She worked at Western Electric in Chicago for three years and then moved to Kirksville, Missouri in 1948 to attend Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University).
She married William “Bill” Wayne Shinn on August 19, 1951 in Kirksville and graduated from college in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Home Economics. She taught high school for one year in Dayton, Ohio, where Bill was stationed with the United States Air Force. The couple was then stationed in England, and thereafter moved to the Kansas City, Missouri, area and became lifelong residents.
Bill and Jeanne were married for 62 years until Bill’s death in 2014. Jeanne is survived by their three children, Daniel Shinn (Petra), Jennifer Johnson, and Melinda Yearry (Dempsey), all living in the Kansas City area, and ten grandchildren: Alexander Shinn (Haley), Allison Smith (Luke), Amanda Johnson, Amy Johnson, Anna Mahoney (Nikhil Nawathe), Camille Jolibois (Jacob), Christopher Shinn (Chloe), Collin Yearry, Paul Shinn, and Phillip Shinn, great-grandson Otto Shinn, and nieces and nephews Pam Cabot, Mike Jones, Scott Jones (Leslie), Brooke Jones (Mark Lallaman), Arthur Kuczek, and Cris Pfeiler. She is also survived by son-in-law John Mahoney of Smithville, Missouri, former son-in-law David L. Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri, cousin Verna Canaday of Douds, Iowa, sister-in-law Marty Jones of Fremont, California, and sister-in-law Ann Jones of Marshalltown, Iowa. Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her daughter Lisa, her parents, her six siblings (Mary Jones, Leroy Jones, Donna Kuczek, Fenton Jones, Ellen Jones, and Kevin Jones), and her niece Jody Whetzel.
Jeanne loved her husband and family dearly. She was all about family and gathering for family meals, birthdays, and just having fun at her home at Weatherby Lake, Missouri, which she designed and which served many years as the family hub. Jeanne was an extraordinary wife, mother, and grandmother. She touched so many lives.
Jeanne enjoyed painting oil portraits of her husband Bill and all of the grandchildren. She was a long-time member of the Platte Woods Methodist Church in Platte Woods, Missouri. Jeanne and Bill were also active in the Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment (ACME) organization, a national organization dedicated to strengthening marriage and families through experiential education.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Platte Woods Methodist Church, 7310 NW Prairie View Road, Platte Woods, Missouri 64151.
Though our hearts overflow with sadness, we thank the Lord as he welcomes home our beloved mother and grandmother. You will live in our hearts until we are together again.
