Joyce Mackender, 81, of Gladstone, MO passed away peacefully on March 8, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born March 21, 1934 in Cuba, Missouri to Lyman and Irene (Grayson) Stewart.
Joyce was an elementary teacher for almost 40 years in the NKC School District and was a lifetime NEA member. She received her BA degree from K-State in 1956 and in 1976 completed her MA from UMKC. Joyce was very active in Clay County politics, and served as a delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. Joyce was a strong supporter of the Elks Lodge in Gladstone, volunteering every year at the Northland Christmas Store. She loved sports, especially the K-State Wildcats and the KC Royals. Joyce was a loving mother and grandmother and was dedicated to their activities which included soccer games, basketball games and swim meets. She was also a member of Fairview Christian Church.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Edward and son, Mark. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Pamela Blechinger and Cary (Brian) Smith and grandchildren, Katelyn Blechinger, Matthew and Allison Smith.
Visitation will be Friday, March 11, 2016 from 2-3 PM with a memorial service following at 3 PM at Terrace Park Funeral Home; 801 NW 108th St. (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek) KCMO.
