Joseph Albert Harbison, 99, passed away peacefully on November 29th, 2016 at 5:10 AM, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family at Spangcrest Nursing Home in Lebanon, PA. Joe was born in Pittsburgh, PA on April 25th, 1917 to the late Susan Arnold Harbison and William Henry Harbison. Joe was the youngest of seven children. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Agnes Romandy Harbison, as well as his daughter Agnes and his son James.
In 1939 Joe began a 43-year career with Trans World Airlines, working in aviation maintenance, culminating as Federal Aviation Agency liaison for TWA. After multiple relocations with TWA, the company transferred Joe and his family a final time to North Kansas City, where he worked at TWA’s maintenance base. In total, he resided in Kansas City for 70 years. He retired in 1981, remaining in Kansas City until 2015. Joseph was an active member of Saint Charles, Saint Patrick’s and Saint Andrew the Apostle Catholic Parishes. He was a passionate volunteer, serving with Habitat for Humanity and Synergy services.
Surviving Joe is his family: (Jeanne) Harbison, Paul (Kathy) Harbison; Jerry (Dayra) Harbison, Mary Harbison, and Barbara (Nir) Cohen. Joe is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Joe led a very active life, traveling extensively. In later years, he and his wife Agnes enjoyed trips to visit children and grandchildren. Joe was also an accomplished woodworker and an avid gardener, pursuing his hobbies throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and exercise, particularly bicycling and walking. He participated in the “bike ride across Iowa” at age 78 and continued his daily walks until the age of 99. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Habitat for Humanity.
