John Scott Benjamin Jr

July 10, 1972 — February 9, 2016

John "Scottie" Benjamin, 43, of Smithville, MO passed away with his family by his side on February 9, 2016. He was born July 10, 1972 in Clearwater, Florida to John Scott Benjamin, Sr and Carol Ann Bishop.

John graduated in 1990 from Blue Springs High School, Blue Springs, MO.  He earned a BA in History from UMKC, Kansas City, MO in 1995 and an MPA from Troy University, Troy, AL in 2009.  John served honorably in the US Army from 1992 until his retirement in 2004.  His service included time in the Reserves with the 325th Combat Support Hospital, Independence, MO (1992-95), the Pony Express Army ROTC Battalion - UMKC, Kansas City and St Joseph, MO (commissioned in 1995), and on Active Duty with the 1st BN 15th Field Artillery, Korea (1996-97) and 3rd BN 13th Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma (1997-99), as well as the Medical Holding Company, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC (1999-2001).  John later returned to work with the Army ROTC as an Army Civilian at ISU, Normal, IL (2009), MIZZOU, Columbia, MO (2009-10), and MWSU, St Joseph, MO (2010-13).  John was a Life Member of VFW Post 7356, Parkville, MO and an active member of Vineyard KC North Church, Kansas City, MO.  He also served as the Family Readiness Group Leader for HHC, 101st AVN REGT while his wife, Kyla, was deployed to Iraq (2005-06) and enjoyed being a stay-at-home daddy during her 5 years on active duty.  John's hobbies and interests included travel, Civil War history, softball, jet boating, and the Hartford Whalers.  He loved nothing more than spending quality time with his family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his grandfather, Earl Bishop; grandmothers, Bettina Young, Mary Gillen; uncles, Wayne Bishop, Joseph Skala.

Those left to cherish John "Scottie’s" memory include his wife of 16 years, Kyla; sons, Keegan and Asher Benjamin; mother, Carol Benjamin; father, John Scott “Scotty” Benjamin, Sr (Shirley); brothers, Doug Benjamin (Kristal), Jeff Benjamin (Amber); grandfather, John-Granby Benjamin, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
