John Leo McGilton Jr, 76, Kansas City, Mo died December 31, 2013 at the home of his son, Michael McGilton in Kansas City, Mo. A Celebration of Life will be 2:00 pm Friday January 10th at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, visitation 1:00 - 2:00 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas University Endowment in memory of John L. McGilton, Jr., 3901 Rainbow Blvd, MS 3012, Kansas City, Ks, 66160.John was born October 19, 1937 to Lucille (Brown) and John Leo McGilton in Santa Barbara, Ca.He was proud to serve his country in the Navy during the Korean War, and was a lifelong member of V.F.W. Post 10906 in Gladstone, Mo. He taught adult education at KC Vo Tech. As a 5' 8" man of 165 pounds with his Colt 45 strapped to his hip and a temperament to match, he was "Walking Tall" and living large. He was a Deputy Sheriff in Clay County for the Clay County Sheriff's Posse. He retired after 31 years at General Motors as Maintenance Engineer, Heating & Air Conditioning. John was Jack of all trades, and Master of most. He enjoyed flying his Piper Tri - Pacer, had a passion for military jeeps, traveled the world in the Navy and continued traveling until his battle with cancer. John was known as "Dr. Doolittle" for his ability to display love to all animals.Most of all he was The Grand Master of Tall Fish Tale Stories.Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Dian McGilton, children, Kimberly Sue, John Wyatt, Scott Tyler, Michael Craig, Curtis Alan, his 1st wife of 35 years, Joan Louise Wehrenberg, stepchildren, Audra Reed, Sharonn Scott-Coble, Denise Scott, Amber Reed, Derek Reed, siblings, Mary Elizabeth McGilton- Bergerhoffer, Shirley Elaine Hanson-Bennet, Clarence Raymond Hanson, Patrick Marion Hanson, 27 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
