Jirina Marie LaVine 90, went to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ on January 10, 2015. She was born March 10, 1924 in Stankov, Czechoslovakia. Jirina survived the upheaval of World War II, came to the United States on July 5, 1949 and earned her U.S. citizenship in 1955. She remained a lifelong resident of Kansas City, MO.
During her life she was active in many organizations, first in her native country as a member of the gymnastic organization of Sokol Plzen I. In Kansas City she retired from Amoco Oil Co. after 30 years in the Capital Investment, accounting office. She was a member of the Kansas City Ski Club for 26 years where she held positions as a member of the board, treasurer and many other positions. Also a member of the friends of Arts at The Nelson-Atkins Museum as a volunteer, the Arts Study Club, the West Plaza Neighborhood Association board member and treasurer, and as a member of the Czech and Slovak Club where she represented her club as a commissioner to the Mayor’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission since 1986 serving as a treasurer and chairperson for the Diplomatic Ball of 1995 and 2007.
In 2006 she was honored with an award of the Czernin Palace Memorial Medal given to her by the Czech Republic for fostering Czech and Us Relations.
Jirina is preceded in death by her parents, Antonin and Marie Zizkovsky, four brothers, Antonin, Ferdinand, Karel, Vaclav and a sister Marie. She is survived by her son Paul and wife Kathy LaVine, two grandsons; Clayton and wife Laura LaVine and Caleb LaVine, and two great grandchildren Chase and Ali LaVine She also leaves many nieces and nephews in the Czech Republic, and a very close friend who was like a daughter, Hana Buric. She had close relationships with many other individuals that are too numerous to name.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, January 17, 2015 with Fr. Bob Hagan S.J. officiating at Guardian Angel Parish 1310 Westport Rd., Kansas City, MO 64111. A reception and celebration of Jirina’s life will follow in the church basement. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 412577 Kansas City, MO 64141
