Jean Griffith (Buckstead) Platt
Jean Griffith (Buckstead) Platt, 96, of KCMO passed away peacefully with her family by her side on June 24, 2014. She was born April 10, 1918 to Olive Griffith and James Elsworth Buckstead of Irene, SD. She was followed in birth by three sisters, ( Elaine, Doris and Annabel) then two brothers, ( Donald and Wayne), then one more sister, (Janice), all of whom have preceded her in death.
The Buckstead family lost their farm in Irene SD in 1933 and migrated to a farm south of Holden Mo. Jean graduated H.S. in Holden, then attended Central Mo normal school, (CMSU today) with a teaching degree. She taught one year in KC, then took a train to New Mexico where she taught on an Indian Reservation. She met Ruel E Platt on this train ride. He was an enlistee in World War II and was being transferred to Camp Luna N.Mex. They married Nov 21, 1942 and she had her first son, Don, in Las Vegas N. Mex. In Nov of 1943. They came back to Mo. and second son , Johnny Wayne was born in Warrensburg Mo in 1946. Third son, Jimmy Gene, was born in K.C. Mo. in 1948.
Jean was a lifelong educator, receiving Masters Degrees in Education, Elementary Administration and Library Science. She taught elementary grades at Winnwood and Munger schools. She taught H.S. Health and Physical Education at NKC HS. She was a Principal/Teacher in the Blue Springs School district and spent her last 18 years as the Head Librarian in the Park Hill School District. She retired in 1982.
Jean loved music and played the piano, organ, accordion, banjo, and studied the harmonica under the Chinese master Chamber Huang.
She enjoyed reading, writing letters, canning, baking and loved being outdoors, fishing, gardening, exercising and basking in the sun, ( she couldn’t stand being cold.)
She was a care giver, a leader, a faithful companion, an outstanding mother and an inspiration to all those she touched. She will be remembered with great love and missed with great sorrow.
There will be an informal visitation and viewing from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at the Terrace Park Funeral home (816-734-5500) located at 801 N.W. 108th St. K.C. MO. just off 169 highway between Gladstone and Smithville Mo.
Stories, Memories, Laughter and Music is what she would have wanted, so that’s the plan..
