James Sons

James Leroy Sons, 92, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Friday, February 9, 2018, at home. James was born March 13, 1925, to Noel and Chelsea (Brought) Sons in a small farm house outside Rock Port, MO. At 17 he moved to Kansas City, MO, with his parents and worked as a shop foreman for Maytag. In 1943 he joined the Army and served in WWII as Internal Security for the 1636 Engineer Construction Battalion. After being injured he was Honorably Discharged. On March 23, 1951, he married Shirley Laswell and built their home in Claycomo, MO. During their residence there he served as mayor for 2 years. James also served as magistrate judge of the City of Claycomo from 1958 to 1962. He was also a former President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the 1st Road District, and Sunday school teacher. James retired at the age of 80 from Twin City Construction as a Field Engineer/Supervisor. In his free time he enjoyed the many special occasions with family, model ship building, tending his rose garden, camping, and fishing. There are also very fond memories of mushroom hunting and gigging frogs with the grand kids.

James is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert, and his son-in-law, Jeff Brooks.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, daughters: Debbie (Phil) Trump of Kearney, MO, and Sandy Brooks of Bucyrus, KS. Grandchildren: Mike (Courtney) and Brad (Jessica) Trump, Taylor (Jimmy) Penrod, and Great grandchildren: Haley, Annie, Joe, Emma, Harper Trump, and many other family and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, February 16, 2018, from 1:00 to 1:30 PM with Funeral Services immediately following at 1:30 PM at Terrace Park Funeral Home 801 NW 108th St. (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek) Kansas City, MO.
