James L. Shields

October 7, 1946 — October 17, 2024

Kansas City

James L. Shields, 78, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on October 17, 2024.

James was born on October 7, 1946. He was the last of four children born to Arthur and Leona Shields. He graduated from Park Hill High school. James married the love of his life, Judy, on October 3, 1966 and from this 58-year marriage, was blessed with two sons.

James proudly worked as a carman for the railroad for nearly four decades, starting his career at the age of 21 and continuing until his well-deserved retirement at 60. His time working on the railroad was more than just a job; it was a reflection of his incredible work ethic and dedication.

Outside of work, James was known for his mechanical skills, always ready to lend a hand to friends and family when their cars needed fixing. A true craftsman, he built race cars. Though he preferred the role of builder over driver, when it came to the race cars he constructed, James found his own thrill in racing dirt cars.

When he wasn't tinkering in his garage, James could often be found on his lawnmower, taking great pride in keeping his yard in perfect shape. His home was his sanctuary, where he found joy in the simple things, from mowing the lawn to spending time with his beloved family and his feisty chihuahua, Axel.

James is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Shields; brothers, Robert and Jerry Shields.

He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Judy Shields; sons, Timothy (Millissa) Shields and Mark (Jamon) Shields; grandchildren, Chas, Jessica, Alicia, Tyler, Joey, Austin, Gage, and Kacey; several loving great grandkids; sister, Bonnie Nelson; sisters-in-law, Mary (Bill) Webb and Lavada Ground; and brother-in-law, Lee Ground.

Services will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home on Friday, October 25th, with visitation from 2:00pm to 3:00pm, followed by the funeral service. Burial will be at a later date.
