In Loving Memory of James Gravett

James Gravett, 80, went to be with His Savior and Lord on Friday, February 27th, 2015 after a hard fought battle with Vascular Dementia. His devoted family and his firm belief in Jesus Christ supported him in his struggle.
James was born to the late Addie and Hobert Gravett in Hinton, OK on September 29th, 1934. It was in Hinton that James grew up and developed his hard work ethic while he picked cotton, delivered ice, and even drove a gas truck. It was in Gary, OK that James found and married the love of his life, Doris Jean Williams, in May of 1956. James and Doris moved to Wichita, KS  and started their family and he found his love of working on planes as he worked for Yingling Aircraft. The couple eventually found their way to Kansas City, MO which they would call home and raise their family. James committed to raising his four children with a firmness, love, kindness, and dedication.
In Kansas City, James worked for TWA the remainder of his career working on planes and eventually retired in 1997. James was a dedicated, hard working man who loved his job and being able to provide for his family. When he wasn’t working James found himself keeping busy with his favorite hobbies of bowling and gardening. His work and hobbies characterized who he was, a man who enjoyed working with his hands. In addition to his hobbies, James had a love of Oklahoma Sooners football, chocolate, pistachios, and ice cream.
James was a committed believer of Jesus Christ and offered many years of service with churches he was a member of. At Gashland Baptist Church, James served as a volunteer in the children’s ministry’s Children’s Church program, ushered, and taught RA’s. At Northland Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO, in which he was a member, James impacted the lives of many children as he and his wife taught Sunday School for elementary age children. He also served as an usher and greeter flashing his welcoming smile.
James is survived by his wife, Doris Jean Williams Gravett; his four children Sherry (Richard) Davis, Cathy (Greg) Harris, Steve (Camille) Gravett, Brenda (Greg) Dahl; his eight grandchildren Brandon (Courtney) Harris, Jennifer (Paul) Fisher, Kevin, Stacie, and Marisa Davis, Nathan Dahl, Nicole and Josh Gravett; and six great-grandsons Aiden, Caleb, Connor, Jude, Ethan, and Malachi.
James’ memorial service will be held at the Terrace Park Funeral Home at 801 N.W. 108th Street, Kansas City, MO 64155 on Tuesday, March 3rd. Visitation begins at 1pm and the service will begin at 2pm.
