Hazel Lewis

July 4, 1917 — March 18, 2019

Hazel D. Lewis, 101, of Kansas City, MO passed away on March 18, 2019.

Hazel was born on July 4, 1917 in Kansas City, MO to Charles and Elvina Snyder. She was raised in a strict German household and as soon as she was old enough she began working at her father's lumber supply company.

Being the spontaneous firecracker that she was, she met the love of her life, Herman Lewis, after stopping to ask if he’d like a ride home in the pouring rain. The two decided to drive around town for a bit when they stumbled upon what looked like a house party, but actually ended up being the home of a judge in Olathe, who was issuing marriage licenses at the time and the two fatefully went along with it and were married that very same night and remained so until Herman’s passing in 1976.

During WW2, she spent time working at the bomber plant in Fairfax. She worked on the assembly line at American Beauty for 30 years, and then continued working as a booking stripper for Hurts-Jones Publishing company, until her retirement after 30 years of service.

Hazel loved putting together jigsaw puzzles, collecting poetry and going to garage sales. She played the steel guitar and loved to sing, even if it was off-key. And anyone who knows how much she loves sweets knows she always loved to eat dessert with her meal and although she loved chocolate, her favorite candy bar was a 3 Musketeers.

Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, Herman and grandsons, Timothy and Bill Sullivan.

She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her daughter, Barbara (John) Sullivan, grandchildren, Jennifer "Jenny" (Scot) Cramer and Terry Sullivan; and numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and great-great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on March 23rd at 10am at the Heritage Bible Baptist Church (501 NE 111th St KCMO). Burial at Johnson County Memorial Gardens (11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS).
