Gregory David Robinson was born Aug. 26, 1958, in Kansas City, Mo., and passed peacefully in his sleep in his home on Jan. 6, 2017, at the age of 58.
From a young age until his death, Greg Robinson was a faithful attender of church. His claim to fame was answering the last three questions correctly to take his team to victory in the United Pentecostal Church Missouri State Bible Quizzing competition. At which point, overwhelmed, he laid his head on the table and burst into tears of relief.
As a man, he was known for his nicknames for people and various objects that are too numerous to name or count. He also had many “Greg-isms” that have stuck with the family and his friends. “What is going on?” is probably his most classic phrase used for pretty much any occasion.
Greg loved his apartment pool and hot tub, which is where you could find him every Friday night with his brother and nephew and every weekend day with his kids, nephews and brother.
A friend with everyone he met, he had friends in every walk of his life. His work friends at Safeway, Hallmark and Grainger will remember his big personality and ability to make every situation fun. He always worked hard while on the job and in life and is well remembered for it.
A classic Kansas City sports fan, he hoped for the best but expected the worst, but that didn’t stop him from watching every Royals, Chiefs and Mizzou game that came on TV. And every year, despite the Mizzou basketball record, you could find him and the guys on their annual road trip to watch the men’s basketball team in different arenas. Those #8guysinanRV had many memorable shenanigans that were, many times, the highlight of the year and much talked about among the guys.
A straightforward man, he lived simply and loved extraordinarily, and his contagious laugh, smile and joy for life shined on everyone he met. He loved his “favorite son” and “favorite daughter” dearly and deeply, and they and the rest of the family will continue to say “Luv u long time” to a father, son, uncle, brother and friend well loved by all.
Greg is survived by his mother, Claudine Robinson; children, Michael Robinson and Sarah Williams, and their mother, Virginia Robinson, as well as their spouses, Rachel Robinson and Austin Williams; siblings, Thaddeus Robinson, Bradford Robinson, Sharon Pittenger, Russell Robinson, Marilyn Johnson and their families; as well as many family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elmer Atlee Robinson and Nellie Phelps, Joseph and Ollie Sample; father, Elmer Lee Robinson; and brother-in-law, Michael Pittenger. Pallbearers are Michael Robinson, Austin Williams, Russell Robinson, Marcus Robinson, Chad Pittenger, Ryan Mead, Nathaniel Hathaway and Russell McKown.
