Gayle Evelyn Means

February 8, 1940 — April 9, 2025

Gayle Evelyn Means was born on February 8, 1940 to Reverend G.W. and Nina Henriksen. From an early age, Gayle was a natural-born caregiver, much like her mother. Whether it was a tired mama needing someone to hold her fussy baby or a person needing a little encouragement or advice, she was happy to offer her assistance. She loved to take care of things, as well. Flowers were a source of joy for her, and her beautiful gardens were proof. She also loved pets, particularly her cats. For this and manyother reasons, Gayle endeared herself to many of those around her. Of utmost importance, though, was her joy and inward beauty that came from the presence of the Lord Jesus in her life. He was her light, and she wanted everyone to know it.

Gayle met her future husband, Lawrence (Larry) during her latter years of High School while her father pastored a church in Keokuk, Iowa. They were married on December 8, 1958, in Vancouver, Washington. Following their marriage, they lived in Keokuk, Iowa, long enough to welcome two sons, Mark (’59) and Duane (’61) into their family. From Keokuk, Iowa, the family relocated to Hillsboro, Oregon, and in 1967 they welcomed their third child, a daughter, Jennifer. The family relocated to several areas in Colorado over the next decade, including Denver, Colorado Springs, Craig, and Grand Junction.

During times of financial distress, Gayle helped to support their growing family in the best way she could. She worked in a variety of jobs, including working at a cannery and working as a telephone switchboard operator. Later, as the children were older, she became an office manager in several medical offices, and finally retired as an account manager at a utility company.

Everywhere they went, Larry and Gayle found a Nazarene church to serve in. Gayle assisted in the nursery and helped with the children’s Caravans program. In addition, she worked behind the scenes, fixing food for youth group functions, arranging flowers, and even singing in the choir on occasion. She had a beautiful alto voice. Gayle always tried to draw attention away from herself, but people were drawn to her because of her kind and helpful personality.

Gayle’s final years were spent living with her son Mark and his wife Jan in their home, and eventually relocating to a memory care facility. While there she struggled with renal failure, but even during days when her health was failing, the staff looked forward daily to her bright smiles, encouraging words, and the care she showed to the other residents.

Gayle left this earth to be with her Lord on April 9, 2025. She is survived by her son Mark, son Duane and daughter Jennifer. She was blessed with 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
