Floyd Sanford Jr.

Floyd E. “Sandy” Sanford, Jr., 88, of Gladstone, MO, died at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 6, 2018. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 11, 2018 beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 900 NE Shady Lane Kansas City, MO 64118. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Terrace Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Wounded Warrior Project , 4899 Belfort Rd, Suite 300, Jacksonville FL, 32256.

Sandy was born February 20, 1930 in Teaneck, New Jersey, to the late Floyd and Maggie (McCormack) Sanford. He was a 1949 graduate of Holyoke High School, Massachusetts. He joined the Navy in 1950 which brought him to the Naval Air Station in Olathe, Kansas. He met the love of his life at the U.S.O. in 1951. They were married August 27, 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri.  Upon leaving the military Sandy, was hired by TWA as a mechanic and retired as an instructor in August 1991. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Envoy Club of Beta Sigma Phi and the American Legion. The accomplishment he was most proud of was being married to the love of his life for 63 years and the blessing of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Sandy enjoyed family, travel, and water. Working for TWA, he was able to do day trips with each of his kids whether it be a day trip to Chicago or a day trip to Disneyland which sometimes caused disbelief from teachers when his kids told their teachers why they hadn't been to school the day before. Family vacations were almost always to water destinations with Florida being the favorite.

Over 40 years ago Sandy and Fran bought a lake home in the Ozarks. His love of the lake had a major impact on so many people that many couples ended up buying a lake house of their own to have their families down to enjoy. Fortunately with Sandy being married to a social butterfly Fran, they constantly had friends or relatives down to their lake house. Sandy was at his best at the lake with having a project to do, then an afternoon and evening of laughs and cocktails.
He and Fran were able to winter in Florida after their retirement with friends and family. Sandy felt very fortunate to be able to have had an impact on so many people's love of the water.
I'm sure Sandy already has a course lined up to teach tying knots in eternal heaven.

Sandy is preceded in death by his daughter, Terri (Sanford ) Dreher and daughter-in-law Julie Sanford. He is survived by his wife, Fran Sanford. He is also survived by his sons David Sanford and Tom Sanford, daughter- in-law Robin Sanford, and son-in-law JD Dreher.  Beloved grandfather of Aaron, Ryan, Krystal, Kyle, Carson and Amber, and great-grandfather of Tate, Colton, Carter, Candas and James.
