Fern Nickerson

August 30, 1930 — January 1, 2016

Fern Dorothy Nickerson, 85, of Kansas City, MO passed on January 1, 2016 at North Care Hospice House.  Fern was born on August 30, 1930 in Hillsboro, Kansas to Arnold H. and Ada D. (Unruh) Penner.  She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1948, moved to Kansas City to attend Secretarial School, raised a family and years later, retired after a long career as a legal administrator.

She was married in 1964 to Rev. William ‘Tribbey’ Nickerson, a Methodist minister in Missouri, who passed in 1988.  She was a very kind and loving mother & grandmother with a sense of humor and a warm smile.  Fern enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, playing cards, loving her cat, eating cookies, attending Ararat Shrine events and serving within her community.  She was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.

Fern is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Barnes, Vicki (Dave) Vermillion and Wendy (Ryan) Coffey; five grandsons, Dustin, Sean, Jeff, Nicholas and Reece. She is also survived by her brothers Curtis Penner and Galen Penner as well as her sister, Joretta (Penner) Martens.  She is preceded in death by her brother, Clinton Penner and both parents.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday, January 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church, 1001 Sunset Avenue, Liberty, MO (816) 781-4554.  A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the North Care Hospice House.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Orchards at Benton House of Shoal Creek for taking such great care of Fern for the past year and North Care Hospice House for their wonderful care of both Fern and her family during her final week.
