Douglas Rodney Steen was born on August 5, 1931 in Orange, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his only brother Dick and his parents, Jacob and Mabel Steen. He collapsed and died on February 21, 2013 in Kansas City, MO while walking his beloved black dog Abby who stayed at his side and barked for help so that his neighbors could find him.Even though Doug was afflicted with severe heart disease and bone cancer, he never lost his incredible sense of humor and his positive attitude on life. He enjoyed solving problems and he always saw the cup as half full. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh and friendly demeanor to everyone he met. His family and friends will miss his warm, caring spirt and loving heart.He is survived by his five children: Marion (Betsy) Keller, Amy Tufano, Douglas (Roddy) Steen, Jr, and their mother Hilda Steen; Phillip Steen and Benjamin Steen, and his wife and their mother Janet Steen. He has six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.Doug worked for many years as a hydraulics engineer on the AT&T Bell Laboratories seaplow projects that buried transatlantic telephone cable. He had a brilliant mechanical mind and loved working with his hands. His engineering projects took him all over the world, including Canada, Europe, and Africa. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany.At the age of 63, Doug became a follower of Jesus Christ and was baptized. Burial will be on Friday, March 1 at 10:00 a.m. at the Leavenworth (KS) National Cemetery. A celebration service of his life will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 10:00 am at Nashua Baptist Church, 11408 N Main St., Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nashua Baptist Church missions fund in memory of Doug Steen.
