Dorothea Elizabeth Young, 97, of Kansas City, MO died on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City, MO. She was born in Atchison, KS to the late Gilbert and Minnie (Poehler) Andrews on July 7, 1921.
Dorothea, an only child, moved with her parents to the Plaza area of Kansas City in 1922. She graduated from Westport High School in 1939 and worked as an artist designing milk bottle caps and dressing store windows. She married Harold E. Young on May 9, 1942 at Broadway Baptist Church, 2 weeks before he received a draft notice for WWII. They moved to Platte County, MO in 1959 where they resided for 54 years. Their marriage of 74 years was based on love, honesty and faith. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, always putting her family first.
Dorothea was a gifted artist and shared her many talents with others throughout her community. She loved to draw, crochet, paint, play the flute, sew, cook and she could bake a mean cherry pie. She and Harold were founding members of Platte Woods United Methodist Church, where she taught childrens Sunday School for nearly 20 years. She was involved in the Scouting program as well as several womens and charitable groups.
Her retirement brought many years of recreational travel with their camping group, The Jayhawk Ramblers, as well as Winters in Arizona and Summers in Maine.
She leaves behind sons David (Sheila) Young, and Roger (Cheryl) Young and daughter Michelle (Jeff) Grace. Grandchildren; Janice (Virgil) Evans, Sarah (Rick) Link, Dan (Kim) Young, Christine Santos, Andrew (Becky) Grace, Phillip and Adam Grace. 10 great-grandchildren and 6 Great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 23, 2019 from 10 AM until time of service at 11 AM at Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108th St. (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek Parkway), Kansas City, MO. Interment will follow at Terrace Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NorthCare Hospice, 2800 Clay Edwards Drive, Kansas City, MO 64116.
