Dick Gregory, Ph.D.

Dick Gregory, PhD, a revered leader in the field of mental health and a beloved member of his community, passed away on August 21, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on March 3, 1947, to Ed and Eva Gregory, Dr. Gregory dedicated his life to the well-being of others through his impactful work as a regional director and CEO of psychiatric hospitals in Kansas City and St. Joseph, as well as his leadership roles in Oklahoma.

Dr. Gregory’s influence on public health was profound, rooted in his academic achievements, including a PhD in public health. His career was marked by a relentless commitment to enhancing mental health services, advocating for the vulnerable, and ensuring that quality care was accessible to all. His legacy in the mental health field will endure as a testament to his unwavering dedication.

A proud Air Force veteran, Dick Gregory carried the values of duty and service into his civilian life. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a devoted sports enthusiast, passionately supporting the Kansas City Chiefs and Oklahoma Sooners. His love for travel enriched his life, allowing him to explore diverse cultures and share these experiences with his loved ones.

Dr. Gregory was also actively engaged in his community through his involvement in psychology clubs, reflecting his commitment to lifelong learning and community service. He will be remembered not only for his significant contributions to mental health but also for his warm spirit, jovial nature, and the countless lives he touched.

Dick Gregory leaves behind a legacy of compassion, excellence, and community. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Danielle Robbins-Gregory; his children, Shaun (Patricia) Gregory, Angela (Jeff) Jackson, Erick (Belinda) Gregory, and David Chase Gregory; his granddaughter, Otis-Gray; sister, Karen Kay (Gerald) Whitfield; his in-laws, Don and Barbara Robbins; his brother-in-law, David (Corrie) Robbins; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Darrel (Joyce) Gregory, Jerry Gregory, and Eddie Ray Gregory.
