Delbert Dean "Smitty" Smith passed away on November 25, 2011 in NorthCare Hospice at North Kansas City Hospital after fighting colon cancer. He was born on May 4, 1925 in Lincoln, Kansas, to Ernest Delbert and Eva Marie Johnson Smith. He grew up in St. George, Kansas and served in the Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. In 1948 he married Jean Lucille Hafenstein, in Manhattan, Kansas and they had six sons. The family moved to Gladstone, MO in 1964. He was a manager of the parts department at Bill Woods Ford, retiring in 1987. Jean passed away in 2008.Also preceding him in death are his parents, sister Helen, sons Jimmie and Gregg, and grandson Anthony.Smitty leaves behind sons Gary, Kansas City, MO; Ray and wife Robbie, Liberty, MO; Kevin, Appleton City, MO; Mark and wife Jennifer, Colorado Springs, CO; sister Betty and husband Victor Fechter, Manhattan, KS; and brother Bob, Seneca, KS. Also eight grandchildren; great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Visitation is 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, November 29 with the funeral service beginning 10 a.m. at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home. Burial and Military Honors at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Research.
