Deanna Louise Smith (86) of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on September 12, 2024. She was born on March 14, 1938, to Ross and Alberta Basinger of Hackett, Arkansas. Deanna had five brothers and one sister, (Billy Ross, Jerry, Paul, Linda, Larry & Lynn), all who preceded her in death.
After graduating from high school, Deanna moved to the Kansas City area, where she met and married the love of her life, Clyde Smith. Together, they had five daughters. Deanna spent 35 years watching children in her home, leaving such an impression many came back to visit in their older years.
Deanna was known for her nurturing and loving nature. She welcomed all family and friends into their home. The house was most often filled with the smells of her home cooked meals and canning of fresh vegetables from her garden. Deanna was an extraordinary baker and loved to try new recipes, although the scent most associated with her was warm chocolate chip cookies, that awaited her daughters when they arrived home from school. She learned to cross stitch from her husband and could be found working on quilt tops or solving word searches in her leisure time. She also enjoyed many a spirited game of Uno with her grandchildren.
A devout Christian, Deanna practiced her faith within the Baptist community, where she found both solace and joy in her beliefs and church family. She was also a strong believer in the power of prayer. Her favorite verse was Jeremiah 33:3, ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and mighty things you do not know.’
Deanna leaves behind a loving family, including her daughters Rhonda Glasgow, Jana Hargrave, Landra Geabhart (Steve), and Lisa Mitchell (Craig). She was a cherished grandmother to Sara Ruch (Jeff), Phoebe McCarthy-Loman (Robert), Amanda Miller (Jeff), Molly Glasgow, Silya Shaw (John), Jason Geabhart (Heather), Brian Hargrave (Rachael), Laura Brewer (Te-Jay), Michael Geabhart (Christy), Aaron Mitchell (Kelsey), Gloria Shoemaker (Paul), Victoria Brown (Connor) and Jacob Glasgow. She was also blessed with 32 Great-Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clyde Smith; her daughter, Donetta Smith; and sons-in-law Greg Glasgow and Steven Hargrave.
A service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home, with visitation at 10:00am, followed by services and interment at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Deanna’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.act.alz.org, honoring her compassionate spirit and heart for helping others in the community.
