Dave served with the US Army during Vietnam as a rear door gunner on a Huey helicopter. He left the service on November 6, 1969 with an honorable discharge. All of his working years were spent in the printing and paper fields. Dave enjoyed a lot of activities: bowling, golfing, camping, boating, fishing, hunting, fly tying and building fishing rods. An avid fisherman, he was a member of the Missouri Trout Fisherman Association since 2006. He was also a member of the Project Healing Waters and Frontline veteran and first responder groups. As a devout Christian, he was a member of Barry Christian Church since 1987.

Dave was deeply involved in helping veterans and the active troops.  He would collect donations and buy items to send to the troops overseas, especially around Christmas.
