Clara Shafar

April 7, 1918 — October 4, 2013

Clara Nadine Shafar, age 95 years, passed away on October 4, 2013. Nadine was preceded in death by her husband K.O. Shafar, her parents, and brother James F. Dicken.  She was born April 7, 1918 to James and Leota Dicken in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Nadine retired from UMKC School of Dentistry.  She liked to keep busy and decided that retirement was not for her.  She returned to UMKC to work for the Chancellor until she was in her mid 80s, as well as volunteering for St. Luke's Hospital and Kaleidoscope two days a week through her late 80s. Nadine was very active in the Westport Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder and in many other capacities.  Nadine had many hobbies, including playing cards with her friends, sewing, knitting, gardening, traveling, collecting antiques, Hallmark Christmas ornaments and spending time with her grandchildren.  Nadine loved to decorate for holidays and each year invited many friends and family members into her home to celebrate.  She loved the warmth of family and the laughter of her grandchildren.  Her eyes sparkled as bright as theirs when her grandchildren showed their excitement waiting for the Plaza lights and fireworks on Thanksgiving as well as tearing open their Christmas gifts. She was a very special Mother, Grandmother, and Great- grandmother.Nadine is survived by her son Scottie, his wife Marcella, grandsons, Craig and his wife Dana, Brian and his wife Tammy, along with five great grandchildren, Nicholas, Samantha, Joseph, J.P. and Becca.  A memorial service to celebrate Nadine's life will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1441 NE Englewood Rd., KC, MO, Saturday, October 12, at 10:30 a.m.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children's Mercy Hospital or the
