Charles (Charlie) Lewis Martin, 88, passed away of complications from Inclusion Body Myositis on September 8, 2010 at the Clarke County Hospital Long Term Care Wing in Osceola, Iowa. He was born May 22, 1922 and grew up on a farm four miles west of Winigan, MO that was given the name of Martinsville where the family owned and operated a grocery store. He was preceded in death by his parents (George and Bernice Martin), his wife of almost 50 years, Betty Jane Martin, two grandchildren (David and Anika), a sister (Nadine) and his brothers Leslie and Clyde. Charlie and Betty Martin were married 12-12-1959 and brought to this marriage a blended family: Verl Lewis Martin (Phyllis) of Atlanta, GA, Donna Martin Davis (Jack) of Van Meter, IA, Judy Lee McMurray (Pat) of Overland Park, KS and Vickie Jean Wiegand (Phil) of Amarillo, TX. He is survived by this blended family and sister JoAnn McBride (Paul) of LaCrescenta, CA and brother John D. Martin (June) of Lakeland, FL. He also has many grand and great-grandchildren that remember him fondly. Charlie served the United States Navy in both World War II and the Korean War aboard the USS Detroit and the USS Antietam. He was a past Post Commander of NE Memorial VFW Post No. 1219. He loved charming people into purchasing a VFW Poppy. Charlie loved the sun, his cars, photographs and his country. He lived most of his life in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a master carpenter and started out at the then KC Dealers Supply, in Kansas City, KS but later moved to and finished a long career with Paxton Lumber Company in Kansas City, MO. He retired from Paxton in 1987 and loved the beautiful woods store where he was manager. Charlie's family gives a heartfelt thank you to the nurses, staff and employees at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, IA for their loving care of Charlie since he moved there in April 2009.In lieu of gifts/flowers memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Charlie to the Clarke County Hospital Foundation, 800 S. Fillmore Street, Osceola, IA 50213-1619. Services will be Monday 11:00 AM Monday September 13th at Northland Cathedral, 101 NW 99th Street, Kansas City, MO. Visitation is 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the church. Immediately following Charlie will have a military graveside service at Mount Moriah Terrace Park, 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City, MO.
