Charles Edward “Chuck” Mercer, Sr., 88, of Kansas City, MO passed away in the early morning hours of January 25th. Charles was born in Sherwin, KS on November 2, 1926. As a young man, Chuck and his family travelled throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska harvesting wheat. Chuck served in the Navy during World War II as a Boson Coxwain, a unique and special position, and participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands. After the war, Chuck was construction foreman for several significant construction projects in the Greater Kansas City Area including the opening of the Midwest Pre-Coat (now Hunt-Midwest) mines, Kemper Arena, Bartle Hall, the Kansas City Intestate system, and many more. Chuck was active with Gate City and later Temple Gate Masonic lodges for over 50 years. He served as Worshipful Master of the Gate City Lodge in 1971 and Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star in 1974.
Chuck will always be remembered by those who knew him as a loyal friend who was devoted to his family. He and his family spent many weekends at Lake Pomme de Terre, creating strong family ties amongst his children and grandchildren.
Chuck is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Audrey Mae Mercer, his parents Charles Solomon and Iola Mercer, sisters Imogene and Ruby, and his brother David. His son, Charles Jr. passed away last year. Chuck is survived by his children, Sharlea Leatherwood and her husband Gary Leatherwood, Kim Elkins and her husband Philip Elkins, and son Tim Mercer. Chuck has 15 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home, (169 Hwy & Shoal Creek Parkway) on Wednesday, January 28th, 2015 at 11:00 am. Friends may visit from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, January 27th. 2015 at the funeral home. Burial in Terrace Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made on Chuck’s behalf to NorthCare Hospice or Concerned Care.
