Cathy A. Smith

Cathy A. Smith, 64, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 25, 1958 to Weeden Fred and Marlene Rosella Shirley, in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was employed for 20 years as an administrative assistant for WSKF Architects in North Kansas City.

Cathy was unforgettable to all who knew her. Children flocked to her warm spirit as she loved them with open arms. She was a caring mother, grandmother, and friend. Cathy loved to sew clothing and make quilts. She would sew green skirts for the elite Chamber Choir at Staley high school for 15 years as well as sewing and altering outfits for her children and grandchildren.

She loved her cats, running half marathons, participating in a CrossFit group for cancer survivors, and having retro Saturday night dance parties with her daughters. She enjoyed baking and won contests for her delicious homemade apple pies.

Cathy was preceded in death by her father: Weeden Fred Shirley; uncle: Curtis Larson; and her beloved cats: Walter, Rocco, and Sophie.

She is survived by her mother: Marlene Shirley; children: Derek (Abby) Smith, Mandy (Christopher) Beltz, and Sarah (Stephen) Schicker; grandchildren: Declan Smith, Owen and Easton Schicker; and siblings: Jerry Shirley, Laura Shirley, and Robin (Mike) Buchta; Aunt Emily Larson, as well as numerous nieces, one nephew, step children, "adopted" children, extended family, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation or the KC Pet Project.
