Brian Daniel "Dan" McLain, 76, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on February 17, 2023 under the care of Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care at his home.
Dan was born on November 6, 1946 in Yakima, Washington. In 1965, Dan graduated from North Kansas City High School and the very next day enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served for 4 years. While stationed in Hawaii, he enjoyed body surfing and playing on the football team. After his military service, Dan returned home and married the love of his life, Marilyn, on February 21, 1970. He then enlisted in the Air Guard where he served for 6 more years as a disaster preparedness specialist before being honorably discharged. Many of the skills that he had learned from his father and the military came in handy when he began his long career as an electrician/maintenance mechanic for Lafarge Corporation (formerly Missouri Portland Cement Co.) and the Kansas City Water Department. After retiring twice and being someone who didn’t like to sit still, Dan occupied his time working at Home Depot. When he wasn’t hard at work he could often be found enjoying sports – Nascar, football, baseball, golf, and even body surfing and speed skating. He tried to participate in as many activities as he possibly could with his children, from coaching their sports teams and helping with girl scouts to being a board member on the PTA. Marilyn and Dan were blessed with the opportunity to travel all across the United States and Europe. Dan cherished his time spent with family and was known for being quite the prankster – always trying to put a smile on their faces.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Viola McLain. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn; daughter, Jami (Bill) Knapp of Northville, MI; daughter, Jodi McLain of Kansas City, MO; son, Brian McLain II (Jessica) of Liberty, MO; daughter, Kyleigh McLain of Kansas City, MO; 6 granddaughters, Ayden, Hailey, and Zoey McLain and Alexandra, Sophia, and Isabella Knapp; and numerous other loving family members.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Simpson House, 4509 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO 64111, on Saturday, March 18th from 2pm-4pm, with military honors at 3:45pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tunnels of Towers Foundation at https://t2t.org/donate/.
