Beverly Jane Small Nelson, 65, of Parkville, Mo, passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2012 in the North Kansas City Hospital after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born on October 6, 1946 in St Paul, Minnesota and was the daughter of Gordon and Dolores Hicks Small. The family moved to Prairie Village, Kansas in 1951 and she graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1964 and attended Johnson County Junior College. In June 1972 she married J. D. Nelson and together they forged the Nelson Construction Company, J. D. Nelson Building Company and J.D. Nelson Homes into major development and construction companies, earning a reputation for building quality custom homes. During a forty year period their companies and subsidiaries built between 1,000 and 2,000 homes in the North Kansas City area, becoming one of the largest custom home builders in the Northland. Mrs. Nelson and her husband were partners in multiple real estate developments and during the 1990s developed the Monticello subdivision in Parkville, built more custom homes on the National Golf Course than any other builder and won many awards for their quality and stylish homes. Mrs. Nelson was an energetic partner in the corporation and ran the day-to-day administration and financial management of the corporation. She became a licensed real estate broker and for the past fifteen years ran the corporation's sales office. She not only earned the respect and admiration of all her business associates, but she was also a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Kenneth. She is survived by her beloved husband Jerry DeWayne Nelson; her two sons Jerry DeWayne Nelson, Jr. and David DeWayne Nelson; her daughter-in-law Tammy and her three grandchildren Meghan, Nicolette and Hannah; her nieces and nephews Jean Thomas, Julie Carr; Jennifer Latterman, Jerry Small, and Jay Small; and 12 great nieces and nephews. Her wake will be held on Wednesday, September 12 between 6:00 and 9:00 PM at the Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City, MO. Her funeral ceremony will be on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM, at the Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home followed by her internment at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery.
