Bettye Gettings

February 22, 1930 — April 10, 2017

Bettye Lou (Reid) Gettings, age 87, formerly of Smithville and Kearney, MO passed away peacefully on Monday, April 10th 2017 at North Care Hospice House in North Kansas City, Missouri, while receiving care for Alzheimer’s disease.

Bettye was born in Amarillo, Texas, February 22, 1930.  As a young girl, she moved with her family to Riverside, CA where she spent her childhood playing with friends in the California sunshine.  Her family then moved to Grants Pass, OR, where Bettye graduated from High School in 1948.  Bettye returned to Pasadena, CA, and attended college a couple years and was proudly nominated as a Rose Bowl candidate.

Bettye joined TWA as a hostess based out of Kansas City with San Francisco being her assigned route.  She met her husband, Albert H. Gettings, a TWA pilot and was married in 1953 with two children borne of the marriage, Lisa Janine and Kelly Lynn.  The marriage dissolved in 1968.   Bettye did not remarry as her two children fulfilled her life and passion of caring for them.

In Bettye’s next chapter of life, she worked as a Dental Technician in North Kansas City before moving into the legal profession.  She worked for the North Kansas City Attorney, Richard Watson before transitioning to work with the Clay County Public Defender, Gerald Keiser and Fred Duchardt for many years.  She retired in May 1995.

Bettye was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

Bettye Gettings is survived by her younger brother, James Reid, (Portland, OR); her two children, Lisa & DJ Jones (Kansas City, MO); Kelly & Frank Wilson (Konawa, OK); two amazing grandchildren, Macy Lynn McFarlin (Taylor, TX); and Kelsey Lauren McFarlin (Dallas, TX) two nephews, Randy Reid (Fairfax, MO) and Mark & Kathy Reid (Smithville, MO).

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 14th at 10:00 AM, at Terrace Park Funeral Home Lakeside Chapel, 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City, MO.

In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully appreciated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
