Beebee Callaway

Beebee Callaway a long time resident of Kansas City North, Platte County, Missouri, died on July 28, 2011. She was born May 30, 1922, in Gilford Station, Wilson County, Kansas.  She was the youngest of six children born to Herschel and Pearl Evelyn (Orendorff) Short. Beebee, her sisters and brother attended a one-room country school located on the family farm at Gilford Station, Kansas (graduated on 5/25/1935), Benedict High School (graduated on 5/19/1939) and Pittsburg State University.   After one year of college she taught two years at a one room country school located in South Eastern Kansas.Beebee moved to Kansas City in 1942 to train for a war job at North Kansas City High School in I.F. Miller's class, North Kansas City Missouri.  During that time she met Thomas John Callaway and they were married on April 18, 1943, by a Justice of the Peace at Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas.  Both worked at the Fairfax War Plant, Beebee worked as a company inspector for Aircraft Accessories in Plant #2 during World War II. After their three children were in school, Beebee accepted a position as an elementary school secretary at Southeast Elementary School one of Park Hill School District's nine elementary schools.  She worked at Southeast from 1957 through 1987 a total of 30 years.The couple belonged to several square dance clubs, the Park Hillbillies and the Woody Woodpeckers.  As well as being very active in the Platte Woods Kiwanis' Club. Beebee was baptized and a member of the Platte Woods Methodist Church, but had not been an active member for many years.Survivors are son Larry Dean Callaway and wife Vera Laurene of Kansas City North, Missouri, daughter Donna Lynn Garrison of Kansas City North, Missouri and daughter Karen 'Sue' Callaway of Vista, California; sister Merimae Carver of Wichita, Kansas, sister 'Sunny' Erickson of Chanute, Kansas; seven grandchildren Shelley Frazier of Springfield, Missouri, Aaron Clark of San Diego, California, Stacey Lincoln of Omaha, Nebraska, Amy Branson of Grain Valley, Missouri, Brian Callaway of Kansas City North, Missouri, Kevin Callaway of Jefferson City, Missouri, Craig Callaway of Kansas City North, Missouri; seven great grandchildren Sydney Frazier of Springfield, Missouri, Brooke Frazier of Springfield, Missouri, Tabitha Lincoln of Omaha, Nebraska,  Stephanie Branson of Grain Valley, Missouri, Solomon Lincoln of Omaha, Nebraska, Sterling Branson of Grain Valley, Missouri, and Jackson Branson of Grain Valley, Missouri.  As well as a brother- in-law Cecil Callaway of Lawson, Missouri, sisters-in-law Wilma Pendergast of Liberty, Missouri, Evelyn Short of Fredonia, Kansas, Ninita Callaway and Georgia Callaway both of Smithville, Missouri and many nieces & nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years Thomas John Callaway, her parents, two sisters, Temperance Campbell and Queenbee Cook, and her only brother Sterling Short.Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday August 2nd at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, with visitation preceding services 1:00 - 2:00 pm. Burial in Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery. Memorials have been established in Beebee's name with the Northland Hospice, Alzheimer's organization.
