Barbara Jean Smith, age 90, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2024. Barbara was born in Palmyra, Maine on October 15, 1934 to Ivan and Helen (Nason) Fletcher. Upon graduation from Newport High School in Newport, Maine, she attended school to become a travel agent then set out on her first adventure, moving to Kansas City where she worked for Braniff Airlines and several travel agencies until her retirement in 2005. She was a member of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association), where she held several Board positions and in 1984 she received the “Woman of the Year” award. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling, square dancing, reading and working in her yard.
Barbara is survived by her three daughters, Denise Peacher (Donald) of Gladstone, Missouri, Michele Huiatt (Corey) of Prosper, Texas, and René Temple (Craig Rossman) of Gladstone, Missouri. She further leaves behind her grandchildren Kimberly Spencer (Tyler) of St. Joseph, Missouri, Matthew Peacher (Kaleigh) of St. Louis, Missouri, Catherine Temple (Ryan Keck) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Brooke Huiatt of Prosper, Texas.
She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Madeline and Evangeline Spencer and Bennett Peacher, her sister, Janet Philbrick (Walter) of Palmyra, Maine, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brothers, Ivan Fletcher, Jr., George Fletcher, Harold Fletcher, and Robert Fletcher, and a sister, Shirley Bryson.
Family will receive friends during a visitation on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 10:00am, followed by burial at Terrace Park Funeral Home Lakeside Chapel, at 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City, Missouri.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the number of special nurses and aides that cared for her this past year at New Mark Care Center, as well as the amazing team from ACG Hospice (Crossroads). Their care and compassion went beyond expectations, and we will forever be grateful.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to ACG Hospice (Crossroads).
